Protection of this tract benefits rare mussel species along this stretch of the Uwharrie River, such as the Carolina creekshell and the Atlantic pigtoe mussels. The river is a nationally significant aquatic habitat. The Uwharrie River corridor plan identifies the tract as a target for protection. The corridor contains a wide array of rare plant species, including the large yellow lady’s slipper.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
