N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
NAT’S CREEK WIMBERLEY, MOORE COUNTY

Acres: 34.11

Acquisition date: 3/21/05

The purchase of this conservation easement protected headwater portions of Nat’s Creek, a tributary to Jackson Creek. The blackwater small stream swamp, streamhead pocosin and sandhill seeps on the parcel harbor a rich assemblage of plants and animals. The tract is part of the Drowning Creek Corridor protection plan, and contributes to protection of two sandhills endemic fish species, the sandhills chub and pinewoods darter, which are listed as Federal Species of Concern. The landowner allows and leads fieldtrips on this parcel for local schoolchildren.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
