DROWNING CREEK CAMP MACKALL, MOORE/RICHMOND COUNTIES
Acres: 786 acres
Acquisition date: 5/20/04
Partner: The Nature Conservancy
Acquisition of the high quality blackwater stream protects the largest water supply intake in the county and protects habitats for several rare sandhills species.
Old growth cypress and gum trees grow in the tract. The site shares four miles of boundary of Camp Mackall. The sites will add nearly 800 acres to the Sandhills Gamelands. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will manage public access.
EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
