N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program

NORTHEAST CAPE FEAR RIVER WELLS TRACT, PENDER COUNTY

Acres: 100

Acquisition date: 2/15/05

This tract protects a nationally significant natural area, and is contiguous with two other tracts owned and managed for protection of natural values, Bear Garden and the Henline Tract.

The federally threatened American alligator inhabits the river and extensive cypress-gum swamps in the area. Acquisition of the tract completes a conservation corridor and protects water quality, scenic resources, and biological diversity along the northeast Cape Fear River. The N.C. Coastal Land Trust facilitated the acquisition of this property, which was transferred to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission for public use.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
