N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program

UWHARRIE RIVER WHATLEY, RANDOLPH COUNTY

Acres: 24.8

Acquisition date: 05/23/06

This parcel lies at the confluence of the Uwharrie and Little Uwharrie rivers. Two rare mussel species, the Carolina creekshell and Eastern creekshell, live in stream on this tract. The woodlands here contain a rich variety of trees and herbs. Trees and shrubs on the site include oak, hickory, elm, ash, silky dogwood and wild pink azalea. Native wildflowers that grow on the tract include white wild indigo, resurrection ferns, twisted sedge and native violets.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
