N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program

TAR RIVER SHERMAN 2, GRANVILLE COUNTY

Acres: 28.1

Acquisition date: 06/19/06

The forest floor is covered with wildflowers in early spring on this tract, including spring beauty, trout lily and toothwort. This parcel borders Cub Creek and the Upper Tar River, which are both designated as nationally significant aquatic habitats.

Both contain populations of federally endangered dwarf wedgemussels. EEP helped to fund several conservation easements along this stream, which was targeted by the program due to the importance of aquatic habits in the river and associated tributaries.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
