N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program

TAR RIVER SHERMAN 1, GRANVILLE COUNTY

Acres: 36.9

Acquisition date:

This tract fronts on the Upper Tar River, which is designated as a nationally significant body of water. The river contains several rare species, including the federal species of concern yellow lampmussel. The forest, dominated by northern red oak, has abundant trout lilies in spring on the forest floor.

The uncommon or rare creeper, Carolina fatmucket, and notched rainbow mussels inhabit the stream that borders the tract. EEP helped to fund several conservation easements along this stream, which was targeted by the program due to the importance of aquatic habits in the river and associated tributaries.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
