N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
TAR RIVER AVERETT, GRANVILLE COUNTY

Acres: 11.4

Acquisition date: 9/20/05

Acquisition of this easement contributes to the protection of the important streams that harbor rare mussel species. Although small, the tract connects with several other parcels along this section of river that have been protected. The spring ephemeral wildflower Eastern isopyrum grows on the natural levee. The Upper Tar River here has nationally significant ranking, and contains several rare species, including the federally endangered plant Harperella. The Upper Tar River on this tract is rich with state and federal species of concern, including Yellow Lance, Green floater, and Yellow lampmussel.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
