N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
SANDY CREEK FAULKNER, FRANKLIN COUNTY

Acres: 20.3

Acquisition date: 9/28/05

The conservation easement on this tract contributes to the protection of the ecologically important Sandy Creek in the Upper Tar River basin. High-quality oak/hickory forest and a large wetland occur on the property. The Atlantic pigtoe mussel, a federal species of concern, lives both upstream and downstream of this parcel, and the Squawfoot mussel also occurs along this reach of Sandy Creek. A string of conservation lands along this creek helps to ensure their continued survival.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
