The Roanoke River is the largest intact bottomland swamp forest east of the Mississippi River, where more than 200 bird species and abundant fish species such as striped and largemouth bass, black crappie, gar, and bowfin have been documented.
EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
