N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
MAYO RIVER GROGAN, ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

Acres: 81

Acquisition date: 8/25/05

Populations of the federally endangered James River spinymussel, as well as the federal species of concern Green floater, have been found along the stretch of river bordering this parcel, which is to be included in the new Mayo River State Park. The land will be open to the public for scenic viewing, hiking, canoeing and kayaking.

This acquisition is the first of several to be purchased with EEP funding for addition to the state park.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
