N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program

LITTLE SHOCCO CREEK SPEED, WARREN COUNTY

Acres: 44.5

Acquisition date: 02/10/06

This land contains a rare piedmont swamp forest, floodplain pools, and a piedmont bottomland forest, which are home to a wide variety of migratory bird species. The trees are large, and are dominated by green ash and Florida maple.

The easement on this tract protects approximately a mile of Little Shocco Creek, a significant body of water inhabited by several rare species, including the federally endangered dwarf wedgemussel and another uncommon mussel species, the notched rainbow.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
