Acquisition of this easement contributes to the protection of the important streams in the Upper Tar basin that harbor rare mussel species. A string of conservation areas along Little Shocco Creek are targeted for acquisition. The federally endangered Dwarf wedgemussel has been documented in two locations on the Little Shocco Creek within two miles of the O'Neal property.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
