N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program

FISHING CREEK HALL, EDGECOMBE COUNTY

Acres: 231.4

Acquisition date: 05/19/06

The coastal plain bottomland forest on the tract has beech, tulip tree and hickory interspersed with wetland sloughs and flats where cypress and gums grow. The forest itself on this parcel is considered a state significant natural heritage area.

Acquisition of this tract also protected nearly 3.5 miles of Fishing Creek, which is designated as a nationally significant aquatic habitat. The creek has uncommon aquatic species, such as the federal species of concern Atlantic pigtoe, which occurs in the creek on this site. EEP helped to fund several conservation easements along this stream, which was targeted by the program because of the importance of aquatic habits in the creek.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
