Floodplain forests on the Canal Branch tract provide a critical transition between uplands and Brown's Creek, which contains two species of mussel, the Brook floater and Creeper. These two mussels occur in the stream within one-quarter mile of this land.
EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
