N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
CANAL BRANCH (BISHOP), ANSON COUNTY

Acres: 79

Acquisition date: 4/13/05

The conservation easement on this parcel adds protected land to the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge, which it borders. Brown's Creek, a state-significant Natural Heritage Area, lies adjacent to Canal Branch.

Floodplain forests on the Canal Branch tract provide a critical transition between uplands and Brown's Creek, which contains two species of mussel, the Brook floater and Creeper. These two mussels occur in the stream within one-quarter mile of this land.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
