The easement protects more than a mile of the high-quality resource waters of the South Fork of the New River, a significant aquatic habitat.
The site (located on the right in the photo and extending along the river for 1.25 miles) is part of the National Committee for the New River’s Aquatic Habitat Protection Plan. The tract is managed as a nature preserve for educational purposes by a camp. The site also contributes to the protection of a healthy population of the shrub Virginia spiraea (listed as a federally threatened species).
