N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
DUTCH BUFFALO CREEK WICKLIFF, CABARRUS COUNTY

Acres: 2.7

Acquisition date: 03/03/06

Although small, this tract adds to a protected corridor along this clear stream, which contains natural cobble and bedrock beds. The stream carries high-quality water to the Yadkin River. Acquisition of this tract protected significant aquatic habitat in this ecologically important basin.

This area is designated as a water-supply watershed. The Suther Wet Prairie, an NCDOT restoration site, is adjacent to this tract, as well as another parcel protected by EEP through a conservation easement. Protected land along this stream helps to protect water quality in this watershed, which was identified as a targeted local watershed by an earlier EEP study. The portion of Dutch Buffalo Creek bordering this tract contains rare aquatic species, including the federal species of concern Carolina creekshell and Carolina darter.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
