N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
DUTCH BUFFALO CREEK WALKER, CABARRUS COUNTY

Acres: 33.7

Acquisition date: 03/03/06

Clear streams with natural cobble and bedrock beds flow through this land, carrying high-quality water to streams that flow to the Yadkin River. Acquisition of this tract protected significant aquatic habitat in the ecologically important Yadkin River basin. .

This area is designated as a water-supply watershed. The Suther Wet Prairie, an NCDOT restoration site, is adjacent to this tract, as well as another parcel protected by EEP through a conservation easement. Easements along this stream help to protect water quality in the watershed, which was identified as a targeted local watershed by an earlier EEP study. The tract has roughly 1/3 mile of frontage on Dutch Buffalo Creek, a regionally significant body of water that contains populations of the federal species of concern Carolina creekshell and Carolina darter

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
