N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program
BIG AND LITTLE ROCK CREEK, ROAN MASSIF BRUCHON, MITCHELL COUNTY

Acres: 146

Acquisition date: 12/20/05

Headwater seeps and streams flowing through this tract empty into the biologically significant North Toe River. The purchase adds to the protected areas of the unique Highlands of the Roan ecosystem, and is just south of U.S. Forest Service land on the Roan High Bluff.

The property includes spruce fir forests needed by species such as the Saw-whet owl and Northern flying squirrel, as well as the rare Gray’s lily. A private donation purchased the uplands.

EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
