BARNES CREEK WYSNER MOUNTAIN GRISSOM, MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Acres: 55.9

Acquisition date: 06/15/06

This tract lies adjacent to a cluster of several state and regionally significant natural heritage areas. Downstream, Barnes Creek is known to support five species of rare freshwater mollusks: brook floater, squawfoot, notched rainbow, Carolina creekshell, and Eastern creekshell.

Mountain laurel and galax grow along the creek on this tract, while the uplands are being restored and managed in part as habitat for the Schweinitz’s sunflower, a rare piedmont plant species. Protection of this tract also contributes to a corridor of protected land.
