A PARTNERSHIP FOR PRESERVATION
The N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program is helping to check the loss of the state's natural areas in partnership with public and private organizations across the state.
These partnerships are making a difference. A special, ongoing relationship between EEP and the Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC) forged in October 2003 capitalizes on the expertise of 23 local and regional land trusts from the mountains to the coast.

The objective is to provide fair economic return to landowners while preserving the state's natural areas for future generations through voluntary land-protection agreements. In so doing, EEP uses existing funding allocated to the state Department of Transportation for offsetting the unavoidable impacts of transportation-infrastructure improvements.
The EEP-CTNC partnership already has yielded successes like acquisition of the Stanley Creek Forest, a 506-acre tract in Gaston County. More than $3 million from the Ecosystem Enhancement Program went toward the acquisition, selected because of its significant habitat and water quality features.

Private landowners are critical to this effort. Conservation agreements are available that work in the interests of both property owners and the state, and that benefit everyone.
