The Appalachian State University Board of Trustees approved an easement for
a stream-bank restoration project for a portion of the South Fork of the New
River.

The trustees discussed the project, part of the N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement
Program, at their regular meeting Friday. This particular portion of the
South Fork passes through the town of Boone on university property. Though
the project will occur entirely on university land, the town owns a 20-foot
easement adjacent to and along the stream, where its greenway trail runs.

To proceed with the project, the EEP requires a project area of the 37 feet
adjacent to the river bank on both sides, according to a memorandum of
agreement from the university. The town would have to agree to move portions
of the greenway easement to allow the trail to be outside the project area,
“when and where possible,” the memo reads.

The trustees unanimously approved the project.
