River Bend updates land use agreements

Move aims to ensure stability in drainage, stormwater regulation

RIVER BEND — The town council voted to update several land use
agreements Wednesday night in a move to ensure stability in drainage and
stormwater management.

The council approved an agreement with the N.C. Department of
Environment and Natural Resources on an environmental enhancement
project. The project involves widening and expanding wetlands adjacent
to River Field and dedicates the land as a natural drainage area for the
next 30 years. DENR assumes all the costs for the project.

In another move, the council voted to renew River Bend’s joint land use
plan with New Bern and Trent Woods under the Coastal Area Management
Act. The updated plan, designed to preserve land and water resources in
eastern North Carolina, will be developed by an outside consultant and
administered by New Bern. CAMA funds 60 percent of the cost and the
three towns the other 40 percent.

“This is something that has to be updated periodically, and that period
is now,” said Councilman Charlie Sharpe said.

In other business, the council:

Approved a budget calendar beginning on March 23 and ending on April 11.

Retained Scott, Adams & Co. as its auditors for 2006-07.

Scheduled a public hearing for the proposed cable franchise fee
ordinance for March 15.

Appointed Albert Friedlander to the Public Works Advisory Board.
